Hello!

It’s officially fall here in Finland! Try to keep your spirits up! I have been loving my new Ylang Ylang essential oil, that decreases stress and lifts my mood. It’s wonderful to diffuse in the evenings. I use it sometimes also as a perfume on my wrists. I wrote a short article about the benefits of Ylang Ylang.

Why doTerra’s essential oils?

doTerra’s Ylang Ylang

Hello!

I have started my fall with my another favourite oil Ylang Ylang. The scent reminds me of jasmine. Ylang Ylang essential oil is derived from Hawaiian star-shaped flower. Ylang ylang is used often to reduce stress and uplift mood. It is my new favourite to defuse at night-time. Ylang ylang is amazing for the skin and hair also. Because it smells so wonderful, it is nice to put on as a perfume. doTerra’s ylang ylang can be used internally, 1 drop to a big water-glass. It gives antioxidants.

Popular ways to use it:

  • foot bath
  • skin (1-2 drops to a table-spoon of carrier oil) and to hair oil treatments.
  • 3-4 drops to a diffuser

Vlog about essential oils for better moods and focusing

Hi!

Greetings from the snow blizzard! I wanted to talk this week about moods and how to help your moods with essential oils. I use them daily for that. Having a good mood is essential for better health. I also made a blog about this two days ago, where I wrote down specific oils for different moods. I also gave out a recipe for better focusing.

Aromatherapy for moods

people-3112339_1920

One of the challenges in living in today’s world is definitely keeping positive outlook in life and staying happy. Even if we have more money and spare time from work and safer environment than people did decades ago, stress and comparing ourselves to everybody else takes the joy out of our lives. Being in better mood reduces stress and improves health. Even if you don’t own a diffuser, you can inhale essential oils from your skin or from bath water. You can dilute them into your skin and most of doTerra’s oils you can use internally.

For stress:

  • Rub two drops of frankincense to the bottoms of your feet (remember to dilute)
  • Put two drops of doTerra’s Roman chamomile into your tea (if you use some other brand, make sure that you can use their product internally)
  • Rub two drops of vetiver and lavender into your skin (remember to dilute)

For anger:

  • Rub patchouli to your temples or bottoms of your feet (remember to dilute)
  • Put few drops of Ylang Ylang to your foot bath

For nervousness and restlessness

  • Rub two drops of rosemary to your wrists diluted or put them into diffuser
  • Put few drops of lavender to your bath water or into your self-made shower gel
  • Put doTerra’s Balance oil blend to your neck, wrists or diffuser (remember to dilute for your skin). This is my favourite blend right now for my 2 year old’s mood swings (also helps me).

For sadness

  • Put two drops of sandalwood to your neck diluted or diffuse
  • Put doTerra’s Elevation blend to diffuser

Recipe for people with difficulties to focus:

For a palm of coconut oil

  • drop of vetiver
  • drop of lavender
  • drop of sandalwood

and massage it into your skin. You can also put those oils into your diffuser. DoTerra has an oilblend called Intune for focusing.

Essial oils to help with your hair and scalp

howtouseessentialoils

My story with a difficult scalp
Oh boy, do I know problems with scalp! I had long seasons when I had a lot of dandruff and itching spots in my scalp. During winters it got worse, but also sometimes during summer time. Sometimes I would upset my scalp by dyeing my hair and sometimes it did nothing. At times dry shampoo was a problem, but sometimes not. I use to die my hair for 15 years every 1-2 months without a stop. Than I just stopped. I decided that my hair color was fine. Full stop!
I started to get annoyed with the smell of coloring more and more during the years and I started to believe that the dying and dry shampoo didn’t do anything good for my scalp. My scalp started to do better. After six months when I stopped coloring my hair, my scalp was fine. When I quit dry shampoo it helped even more. I have a very fine and thin hair. I get it from both side of the family and there is nothing I can do about it. My hair dresser thinks I also have a tight scalp, that prevents nutrients from getting into my hair follicles. I should massage it more often.
The situation now
I still have little dandruff every now and then, mostly during winter or if I have gotten sun into my scalp, but the worse is absolutely behind me. I have also reduced chemicals in my scalp. I don’t use commercial hairspray, except on a very rare occasion.
I have started to make my own hairspray, that you will get a recipe for later! I have started to use dry shampoo again sometimes (not often at all). I use Lush’s No Drought dry shampoo. It is not as handy as the spray ones, but it will do its job. I find it little bit messy when putting it on. Don’t put it on with your party shirt on!
Reasons for problems with scalp and hair
The problems with the scalp can be caused by stress, poor nutrition, illness or wrong kind of products. Some medication and hormones can cause hair to get thin. Hair can get greasy because of genes and hormone imbalance. The skin gets flaky because of over production of cells or yeast infection. Fungal infection may cause big amounts of hair to fall off.
My own hair used to got greasy very quickly before. I used to wash it very often and I used chemical shampoos. Than I started to cut down the amount of washing and I left the chemical shampoos all together.  It has balanced out my scalp a lot!  Because I don’t use chemical hair products, except on a rare occasion, I don’t even have a need for a heavier wash.
When you are used to chemical shampoos, your hair gets different when you leave them out. So you need to be patient with the “rehab process”! 🙂 It gets worse, before it gets better! This also happened to me for few weeks. My hair was down a lot! 🙂 Usually now I rinse my hair and scalp with warm water. You can get good natural shampoos and conditioners (some are soap bars, where there is less packaging needed) from Lush, if you don’t feel like making your own!
DIY conditioner for dry, flaky or red scalp:

                                 2 drops of geranium/lavender oil
                                 1 drop sandal wood oil
                                 2,5 tea-spoon of olive oil
                              Massage and rinse well!!

DIY Shampoo for greasy scalp:
                                  3 drops of cypress oil
                                  2 drops of rosemary oil
                                  2 drops of lemon oil
5 tea-spoon of castile soap (f.e Dr Bronner’s baby or DoTerra’s cleaning concentrate)

Essential oils for animals

IMG_3035

Animals react as well to essential oils as humans. Essential oils have an effect on emotions and stress. We all know how smells influence straight away on our emotions. If we smell something gross or something wonderful. If we smell something uplifting or something delicious. Are memory of all the smells is extremely large and those memories makes us feel things. People who compete in dressage will use calming essential oils like chamomile or lavender just before the contest with their horses (DoTerra also has an oil blend called Serenity).

You can also use aromatherapy for your animals just as well as for yourself when treating cuts, calming them when travelling or other stressful situations and taking care of their skin. Just make sure that your animal doesn’t need immediate care from your vet.

Treating cuts and taking care of your animal’s skin and your own

Good oil for treating cuts is Melaleuca. It cleans the wound and reduces the infection. It’s good one to try at first, when the wound is fresh. If the cut is longer you can take two drops of essential oil and dilute it to some carrier oil. Lavender works great also to skin irritation. It calms irritated, burnt or damaged skin. If you want more antiseptic care, frankincense is your oil. Helichrysum doesn’t let your wound become septic.

Calming an animal in stressful situation

Lavender calms addition to adults and children also your stressful pet. Valeriana and vetiver are calming too. They mimic the naturally calming GABA transmitter. You can put your essential oil to the steamer or put a drop to your own fingers and let your animal smell it. If it’s a larger animal, you can rub a drop on top of their nose.

Tips on how to use essential oils in skincare

how-to-use-essentialoils

Are you ready for the world of essential oils?

Essential oils can improve the condition of your skin and help you in your skin problems. Skin is the largest organ in human body and absorbs essential oils very effectively. If your body doesn’t agree with a particular essential oil, you can probably see it first from your skin. In this case you should choose a different oil from another plant.

Oily skin and acne

When your sebaceous glands are over activated, your skin gets oily. When you add unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, hormonal problems and stress, your skin can get even worse. Skin problems can also be caused by puberty, pregnancy, menopause and menstruation. You can put a drop of T-tree, camomile or lavender oil straight on your pimples. You can also mix two drops of essential oils on your bath water or put two drops of lavender to your steamer to release stress. Roman camomile helps also to the inflammation of acne. Lemon is antiseptic. Basil, grapefruit and lemon grass help to clear the skin. You can dilute two drops of them and use regularly on your face or back.

Dry and mixed skin

The dryness of your skin maybe caused by your sebaceous glands not being active enough, but also outer factors like: coldness, wind and sun. Dry skin gets flaky easily and also ages quicker than oily skin. Mixed skin is very common and the most common skin type among Finns. Having mixed skin means that the skin on your nose, jaw and fore head gets oily, but cheeks maybe still be dry. Dry skin absorbs oils very quickly. It’s good idea to add two drops of essential oils to your face cream or carrier oil like coconut oil or jojoba oil. It helps also to put two drops to your bath water. Good essential oils to dry skin are: Rose, sandal wood (moisturising), lavender, jasmine and camomile. T-tree oil is good for flaky skin. Good essential oils for balancing mixed skin are: Geranium and ylang-ylang.
