Naturally healthy digestion

lemon-2539163_1920

Healthy digestion effects on so many things: Food allergies, healthy immune system, quality of sleep, voice etc. In Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda diet healthy digestion is thought to be very important. We often eat too fast processed food and don’t exercise enough.

They recommend in Ayurveda diet lemon and ginger before main meals to activate salivary glands for good digestion. I’ve been drinking hot lemon water first thing in the morning for years. I have noticed that it’s good for my sensitive stomach before food.

Prebiotics and probiotics

In the West doctors stress the importance of fiber. Nutritional therapists in Finland recommend that people would get  25-30 grams of fiber a day. Many people don’t get that. Eating whole wheat will help with that.

Nutritional therapist also recommend prebiotics. They are components of food that haven’t been digested. You can get them from fruit and vegetables. They add good bacteria in the gut and they are food for probiotics. 80% of your immune system happens in your intestines. Probiotics are also very important. You can get them from yogurt and fermented food like sauerkraut and kimchi.

Nutritional therapist recommend drinking enough water for those who suffer from bad digestion. The recommendation is 1-1,5 liters a day. In Chinese medicine and indian Ayurveda diet they don’t recommend cold water like we are used to in the West. They feel that the water should be warmer than from the fridge.

Cleansing and improving immune system

Cleansing and fasting is so popular nowadays. I have never really tried that. I decided however to try doTerra’s GX assist cleansing and PB Assist for 10 days each. GX Assist has essential oils in it that cleans intestines and then PB Assist offers probiotics.

The first day I had taken GX Assist, my sensitive stomach was bubbling for sure. After that I didn’t notice anything. I will probably blog after a while and let you guys now, how my trial went and did I notice any changes.

Avoid bloating with essential oils

Bloating is very common complaint, caused by too much liquid or gas in the stomach. It’s good idea to consult your doctor to make sure nothing is wrong, but if there is not a medical problem, diet and natural remedies can reduce bloating.

Over eating is very common reason for bloating. It can add gas to your intestines. Processed foods like pies and crackers can give problems easily. Also bananas, peas and cabbage. Reasons behind problems with digestion can be celiac disease (familiar to me!), lactose intolerance and constipation. For some people adding good bacteria to their gut helps a lot. For women their period can cause bloating either before or during.

Problem with digestion

  • Eat often and in peace, but lightly
  • Avoid fizzy drinks
  • Avoid mixing proteins, fruits and starches in the same meal
  • Rub oil to your stomach that has few tea spoons of sunflower oil mixed with two drops of black pepper, ginger and peppermint oil.

Bloating caused by periods

  • Try food that has vitamins E and B6 and magnesium in them
  • Avoid caffeine, sugar and salt
  • Rub your calfs and upper thighs with upward motions and lumbar region and stomach clockwise.

Mix to your massage oil:

  • Few drops of juniper berry, rosemary and lavender mixed with 5 table spoons of grape oil.

Essential oils for cold feet and hands

Poor blood circulation in feet and hands can take some joy out of exercising outside in the winter. With essential oils you can relieve symptoms. The reason why some people get cold hands and feet is because they don’t get enough warmness, oxygen and nutrients in their blood. It can be caused by an illness, but most often it’s pretty harmless. Put more clothes on especially if you are a smoker, tired or restless.

Essential oils that help with coldness

  • 2 drops of rosemary and black pepper oil mixed together with two table-spoons of warm almond or olive oil
  • 4 drops of ginger oil mixed together with two table-spoons of warm almond or olive oil
  • 2 drops of doTerra’s Onguard oil blend that has ginger, clove, wild orange and cinnamon in it mixed together with one table-spoon of olive or almond oil.  This also works well if you think you might be getting a cold.

Rub the mixture in your arms, feet and calfs. Massage it more powerfully when you go upwards and lighter when you go downwards.

Indian head massage with essential oils

Indian head massage includes a serie of massage movements that touches the scalp very softly and very firmly. Indian head massage also includes massage for shoulders, neck and upper arms. A person getting the massage sits in a chair with normal clothes on.

Few years ago Indian head massage was very popular in Finland. Now I feel that it’s not that popular anymore, but it is very relaxing and easy to do at home. Hair dressers use to offer it every where and it was taught in hair dresser schools. Of course spas, masseurs and beauticians still offer it. Indian head massage is extremely old thing, over 1000 years old, so I assume that it will come back as a trend again. If you need help with doing it at home, there are classes for it.

Essential oils for indian head massage

Good carrier oils for scalp are coconut, sesame, olive and almond oil. You can mix 100% pure essential oils to a carrier oil. Lavender oil relaxes and reduces stress. doTerra also has an oil blend called Balance that will help you to relax the whole body. There are many leaf oils in it, camomile and frankincense. Frankincense helps to focus your mind. If you want more energy and uplifting: Peppermint, lime, wild orange and grapefruit oils help with that. doTerra also has an oil blend called Cheer, that helps to lift your spirit and bring you cheer. It has wild orange peel, anise, bud of clove, vanilla, ginger and cinnamon in it.

Improve your health with produce

You can improve your health with different foods from your fridge or cupboards. Here are some tips:

  • Cold pressed olive oil and coconut oil can be used for diluting essential oils, reducing ear wax, skin infection and chopped lips. I have replaced almost all lotions and lip balms with coconut oil
  • Fresh ginger is good for flues, coughs, fevers, digestion, nausea, menstrual pain and increasing blood flow. Ginger is great with cold and hot water when you are starting to get ill. If you don’t like the taste of ginger, you can make it sweater with honey or something else.
  • Dry plums, fruit and figs help with constipation

  • Apple cider vinegar helps with inflammation in joints, flues, fungal infections in skin and problems with hair and scalp.
  • Lingonberry and cranberries (fresh juice too)  help with urinary track health and preventing infections in it. I know people who have tested this and have been happy with the results.
  • Lemon (or lemon oil) can be used for treating calluses, fever, digestion problems, infections, sore throat and oral candidiasis.

Essential oils for muscle pain

howtouseessentialoils

I’m sure everyone suffers from muscle pain every now and then. When you start a new hobby, work on the yard or play with the kids and use the muscles you normally don’t, you are guaranteed to have muscle pain. And then there are people like me, who have difficulty remembering days, when you woke up without pain. Regardless of which category you belong to, essential oils can help you if you want to try something else than the anti-inflammotary drugs.

What oils should you choose for your cupboard?

  1. Peppermint oil releases pain efficiently. That is my favourite oil. I use it daily for my lower back and hips. It works very fast! DoTerra has efficient oil blend called Deep Blue, that is good for body builders, weight lifters and other athletes. Peppermint also helps with tooth ache, head ache and rheumatism. You can add it to your bath or mix two drops to carrier oil and on to your skin. I use occasionally Deep Blue supplement daily (it has caraway, peppermint and ginger in it and also frankincense and turmeric). I have noticed that I don’t need to use Deep Blue oil than as much. DoTerra also has Deep Blue lotion, if you don’t want to mix the oils. My mother likes it for her sciatica pain.
  2. Lavender reduces inflammation and swelling by increasing blood flow. It also has calming impact. You should put two drops to carrier oil and rub it to area. You can also add few drops to your bath water.
  3. Rosemary releases pain. It helps with inflammation in joints and also heals the skin.  You can dilute it to carrier oil and rub it to the area (beside the point, but rosemary helps with cellulite too).
  4. Black Pepper releases muscle pain efficiently. It warms the muscle and helps with blood flow. Great oil for people who work out! You should put two drops to carrier oil and on to the skin.
  5. Thyme is great oil for muscle pain, joint pain and rheumatism. Thyme also lowers blood pressure as well as increase blood circulation. Thyme is great for sports injuries too. thymes-1287441_960_720

Ginger helps with muscle pain, joint pain and muscle cramps. Ginger should be diluted to carrier oil and then be rubbed to the wanted area. Ginger is also good for menstrual cramps.
