Essential oils for stronger nails

how-to-use-essential-oils

Sometimes I have thought about, how you get used to your nails and think that that’ s the way they are always going to look like. The history with my nails has changed a lot! I had very good nails growing up and as a teenager. Than they got worse (I believe due to my diet). I had acrylic nails for years and two years ago I notices that my nails were very long and strong. I can’t really bend them. Something had clearly changed, because they use to break all the time.

My number one tip for strong nails are green vegetables like spinach and broccoli. I put them icy in my morning smoothie and add some green powder too. That is the only change I have made to my diet addition to cutting back a lot of diary. Coconut oil gets into my nails a lot, because I dilute my essential oils almost daily. I have read that almond oil is also good for the nails.

Here are some tips for improving your nails with essential oils:

  • Calendula oil is great for nails and cuticles. Add calendula oil or lotion for your DIY nail products
  • Tea tree oil is good for treating nail fungus (read more here about taking care of your feet with oils). Add two drops of tea tree oil to two table spoons of almond oil and apply it to your nails and cuticles.
  • For other infections in your nails and cuticles you can use eucalyptus or patchouli oil in same ratio as tea tree oil.

Essential oils for problems with feet?

essentialoils-feet

Different problems with feet

Celluses, infected bunions and ingrown toenails can be painful, even every day. Especially if you work on your feet. You can relief problems with feet with essential oils, walking bare foot and going to pedicurist.

Calluses

Calluses are thickened skin and dead skin cells. There can be a hard core in the calluse that is from dead skin cells and points to live tissue. That can cause pain, when it hits nerves. Rub few drops of lemon oil to the calluse. Cover it with something for 20 minutes.

Calluses in feet and hands

Calluses that don’t have hard core, don’t often hurt, unless they are in a difficult spot. They might cause the feet to get more tired also. Calluses may cause the weight not to get evenly distributed. People who work with their hands or play instruments can get calluses in their hands. You can treat them same way with lemon oil.

Infected bunion

Infected bunion is located in the side of the big toe. It can be red or soar. Some people get their bunion infected more easily in wrong kid of shoes. Two drops of tea tree oil will help with treating broken skin. You can also put your feet in the hot water, where there is few drops of tea tree oil.

Ingrown toenails

Ingrown toenails can press against skin tissue that can cause pain and inflammation. Sometimes right cutting technique can help with the problem. Don’t cut the toenails too short and always cut them straight horizontally. Don’t make them round in the edges. You can soak inflamed toenail in a hot water that has few drops of tea tree oil.

Tips for taking care of your feet:

  • Soften your calluses in a hot water and try to reduce them softly with foot scraper.
  • By adding two drops of lavender to coconut oil, you can get a wonderful foot lotion.
  • You can pirk up your feet by putting two drops of peppermint oil to your foot lotion/coconut oil.
  • If you suffer from sweaty feet, bathe your feet daily in a sea salt water. You can add two drops of eucalyptus/ peppermint.
  • You can increase the blood stream in your feet by rubbing them. While you put your lotion in them, rub them at the same time.

Indian head massage with essential oils

Indian head massage includes a serie of massage movements that touches the scalp very softly and very firmly. Indian head massage also includes massage for shoulders, neck and upper arms. A person getting the massage sits in a chair with normal clothes on.

Few years ago Indian head massage was very popular in Finland. Now I feel that it’s not that popular anymore, but it is very relaxing and easy to do at home. Hair dressers use to offer it every where and it was taught in hair dresser schools. Of course spas, masseurs and beauticians still offer it. Indian head massage is extremely old thing, over 1000 years old, so I assume that it will come back as a trend again. If you need help with doing it at home, there are classes for it.

Essential oils for indian head massage

Good carrier oils for scalp are coconut, sesame, olive and almond oil. You can mix 100% pure essential oils to a carrier oil. Lavender oil relaxes and reduces stress. doTerra also has an oil blend called Balance that will help you to relax the whole body. There are many leaf oils in it, camomile and frankincense. Frankincense helps to focus your mind. If you want more energy and uplifting: Peppermint, lime, wild orange and grapefruit oils help with that. doTerra also has an oil blend called Cheer, that helps to lift your spirit and bring you cheer. It has wild orange peel, anise, bud of clove, vanilla, ginger and cinnamon in it.

Improve your health with produce

You can improve your health with different foods from your fridge or cupboards. Here are some tips:

  • Cold pressed olive oil and coconut oil can be used for diluting essential oils, reducing ear wax, skin infection and chopped lips. I have replaced almost all lotions and lip balms with coconut oil
  • Fresh ginger is good for flues, coughs, fevers, digestion, nausea, menstrual pain and increasing blood flow. Ginger is great with cold and hot water when you are starting to get ill. If you don’t like the taste of ginger, you can make it sweater with honey or something else.
  • Dry plums, fruit and figs help with constipation

  • Apple cider vinegar helps with inflammation in joints, flues, fungal infections in skin and problems with hair and scalp.
  • Lingonberry and cranberries (fresh juice too)  help with urinary track health and preventing infections in it. I know people who have tested this and have been happy with the results.
  • Lemon (or lemon oil) can be used for treating calluses, fever, digestion problems, infections, sore throat and oral candidiasis.

Essential oils and yoga

howtouseessentialoils

A lot of people seek calming experiences from yoga for their everyday life. A moment, where they can take a break from their shopping lists, work phone calls and their own thoughts. Some also want yoga to improve their bodies, make it stronger, more limber and healthier. I’m not going to get deeper with yoga asanas here, but with essential oils you can get even better health benefits with your yoga practise.

Diffuse essential oils while doing yoga practise

Depending of the time of the day and the mood you are seeking for, with diffusing oils, you can affect your state of mind. With Lavender, Valor or Frankincense, you can relax your mind. You can get more energy with citrus oils, like Lemon, Lime or Wild orange. You only need two drops of essential oils to your diffuser

Essential oils on your skin during or after yoga practise

Before or after yoga, you can release tensions in your muscles with Lavender or Valor oil. You can put two drops to coconut or olive oil and on to your sour muscles. If you practise strength yoga, vinyasa yoga or ashtanga yoga and your muscles seem sour after, you can put two drops of peppermint oil or doTerra’s Deep Blue oil blend that releases pain from your muscles or joints. You can dilute the oils with coconut or olive oil.

Getting rid of ticks with essential oils

howtouseessentialoils

Ticks, they ruin the summer day very easily! How to get rid of ticks, before you need to be pulling them out and worrying about lyme disease? My inspiration for this post came from my own midsummer festivities. We were in a beautiful place, that had high grass and low trees with leafs. Luckily nobody got a tick from our group, except our friends’ dog! Our neighbor’s little boy, who is the same age as my son, got a tick from his trip! There are a lot of ticks on the coast.

How do you repel the ticks with as little toxins as possible? I get chills of the idea of showering all those chemicals on to my little boy. And I don’t want those either. You will get a good tick repellent (works also well to other bugs) by mixing some carrier oil (for example olive, coconut and jojoba oil) to lemon, eucalyptus or peppermint oil. Just mix two drops to the carrier oil and rub it into your skin. If you want to make a mixture add 20 drops to a small bottle of oil. Remember to apply it to your skin often enough! I know people who take a little bit of essential oil to their hands and quickly wipe their legs and arms. For kids, seniors and people with sensitive skin, it is recommended to dilute the essential oils. Remember to cover your skin with clothing, especially when working in the bushes or kids playing there.

Cleaning with essential oils

brush-15931_960_720

Are you ready for essential oils?

Yes! Everybody’s favourite topic: Cleaning! So exciting and wonderful! Especially in a family with small kids and pets, where you get to do it almost non stop. What new can essential oils bring to cleaning? Quite a lot!

A lot of people suffer from cleaning head ache and no! It’s not emotional! When you inhale chemicals couple of hours, it’s no wonder if you start to feel it. Because Do Terra’s essential oils are completely natural without anything extra added to them, you and your family  will not inhale any extra toxic chemicals.

As a mother to a toddler it feels good, that my child can’t find anything toxic from the cupboards, even if they get it in their mouth or eyes. Essential oils are strong, but the amount in your self-made cleaning product is small. Kids are also very sensitive to chemicals when they are developing. The research show that different chemicals disturb their neurological development and immune system. Kids also inhale more frequently than adults so the amount of chemicals they get compared to their body weight is much bigger. According to United States Environmental Agency the air at home is 200-500% more polluted than outside, because the house cleaners.

Because you need very little essential oils for your self-made cleaning products (few drops), the cost of the cleaner stays low. Essential oils are powerful and remove dirt well and before all remove unwanted smells. Products are also environmentally friendly. I use the same jars and bottles for my self-made cleaners time and time again (bottle for my laundry detergent, liquid dish soap and my water sprayer).

So what kind of cleaning products do you need for your home? Hmm. Same kind as your great grand mother. Which means: Baking soda, vinegar, Castile Soap (Dr Bronner’s baby, liquid form of Marseille soap or Do terra’s Onguard) and sea salt. In some of the recipes you see people using washing soda (dish tablets and dish powder) or olive and coconut oil.

Best essential oils are for cleaning:

-Lemon, Lime and Wild Orange

–  Eucalyptus and Tea Tree

-Thyme and Peppermint

-Do Terra also has oil blends like: Onguard and Purify blends

My favourite recipe for all-purpose cleaner ( I put it in an old spray bottle):

  • 1/4 Castile Soap/ Liquid Marseille Soap/ Do Terra’s Onguard
  • 1/4 Apple cider vinegar
  • rest water
  • 5 drops of Lemon oil and 5 drops of peppermint (if you used other vinegar than apple cider you can add third oil)

Tips on how to use essential oils in skincare

how-to-use-essentialoils

Are you ready for the world of essential oils?

Essential oils can improve the condition of your skin and help you in your skin problems. Skin is the largest organ in human body and absorbs essential oils very effectively. If your body doesn’t agree with a particular essential oil, you can probably see it first from your skin. In this case you should choose a different oil from another plant.

Oily skin and acne

When your sebaceous glands are over activated, your skin gets oily. When you add unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, hormonal problems and stress, your skin can get even worse. Skin problems can also be caused by puberty, pregnancy, menopause and menstruation. You can put a drop of T-tree, camomile or lavender oil straight on your pimples. You can also mix two drops of essential oils on your bath water or put two drops of lavender to your steamer to release stress. Roman camomile helps also to the inflammation of acne. Lemon is antiseptic. Basil, grapefruit and lemon grass help to clear the skin. You can dilute two drops of them and use regularly on your face or back.

Dry and mixed skin

The dryness of your skin maybe caused by your sebaceous glands not being active enough, but also outer factors like: coldness, wind and sun. Dry skin gets flaky easily and also ages quicker than oily skin. Mixed skin is very common and the most common skin type among Finns. Having mixed skin means that the skin on your nose, jaw and fore head gets oily, but cheeks maybe still be dry. Dry skin absorbs oils very quickly. It’s good idea to add two drops of essential oils to your face cream or carrier oil like coconut oil or jojoba oil. It helps also to put two drops to your bath water. Good essential oils to dry skin are: Rose, sandal wood (moisturising), lavender, jasmine and camomile. T-tree oil is good for flaky skin. Good essential oils for balancing mixed skin are: Geranium and ylang-ylang.

Essential oils for backpain

howtouseessentialoils

My story started with essential oils after years of back pain. After years they told me that there is nothing wrong with my back, it’s my hips. I guess it doesn’t matter, I got very familiar with the over the counter medicine as well with the relaxants. Because I also have celiac disease, my stomach couldn’t handle them at all, let alone two weeks at a time as they suggest. So there I was popping pills and eating lactic acid bacteria.

When you go to aroma therapy, they often give you a massage. That does wonders for anybody, but who can afford it or has the money to go there all the time? I needed relief from pain almost every day, especially with a small boy and the job where I was standing the whole day. Peppermint oil works with a lot of people and that also worked with me very quickly. After few moments on the skin, I felt warming sensation. I was very surprised how effective it was! You should almost always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil. I always have coconut oil at home, so I usually use that. Other carrier oils work well too, especially when you are just staring out. After some time you can start trying other oils and see, which is the best for your skin type. Very good ones are jojoba oil (especially on your face) and olive oil.

Other good oils for your back pain and other muscle pain are: Basil, Roman camomile, juniper, eucalyptus, pine and marjoram. I haven’t tried those yet, but people really recommend basil. Lavender and sage reduce inflammation. You can put two drops on your bath water and two drops to your steamer to help you sleep at night. For kids under one years old, it’s not recommended to use essential oils for their skin or heavily use a steamer. With kids it’s recommended to use lot of carrier oil and maybe a drop of the essential oil. You should also be careful steaming eucalyptus with small kids. A lot of people are afraid of diluting the essential oil, because of it not working properly after that. Skin however absorbs the essential oil well, even if you use a lot of carrier oil.

When I first started, I was very price conscious and bought cheaper brands. When I got more into it and read more I found Do Terra products.  I use everyday their Deep Blue oil blend. It has peppermint, Ylang Ylang, camomile and other oils in it. I just put two drops on my coconut oil in my hand and I’m ready to apply it. Do Terra also has Deep Blue cream, but I haven’t tried it yet. I was thinking about testing it on some trip of mine. Do Terra’s products have been worth the extra money. They slowly extract the oils from the plants and they don’t add anything artificial in them (which immediately lowers the price of the product). I could smell the difference right away! You can read more about Do Terra’s steaming process in here: https://doterra.com/US/en/why-doterra
